Marquez fastest from Rossi during a dusty opening practice for the Austin MotoGP.

Pedrosa is attempting to ride despite surgery for a wrist fracture sustained last time in Argentina.

Zarco suffered an early engine problem and was forced to park his number one machine.

Lorenzo was running the large Ducati wing fairing, while fellow GP18 riders Dovizioso and Petrucci stuck with the standard version.

Track surface modifications have been made to try and reduce the COTA bumps, from turns 1-9 and 16-19, producing this morning's dust.

The track should get substantially faster as the weekend goes on, but rain is also forecast at some stage...
