Mixed fortunes for Airwaves pair.

The season couldn't have started any better for Airwaves Ducati's Gregorio Lavilla. Two double wins at the first two rounds has set him up nicely. However, his team-mate Leon Haslam has not had the same luck and is yet to grace the podium this season.

Lavilla has 131 points bagged for his title chase while Haslam is behind on 64, which is 32 points down on his tally from this time last year. He looked set to pull it back at Silverstone but suffered a huge high speed off which hampered his weekend.

Team manager Colin Wright told Crash.net what happened, "Leon hit two curbs and he crashed at 220kph, he went faster as he hit the ground because he slid for quite a considerable way. He had just put in his fastest lap of the day and he was on a charge for another good lap. In fact he was going to do several fast laps and going into the chicane he noticed a slower rider going into the chicane and he thought "I'm going to actually end up catching him in the chicane if I'm not careful." So he shut off and braked at the same time and he was actually on full lean as he hit the brakes and he just lost the front. In an effort to avoid the back marker he wanted to get out of the chicane quick but it didn't work."

Haslam pushed the now reigning Bennetts British Superbike Champion Ryuichi Kiyonari to the very end of the championship last year but unfortunately for Haslam that form is yet to return. "Leon will admit himself that is expectations of himself were high, as it was for all of us, " said Wright, "Obviously we were hoping that Leon could continue where he left off last year but I think that perhaps because of those expectations he has put a bit more pressure on himself than he usually would have done. Last year he was relaxed and focused and enjoying himself and I think that now he has realised that these younger guys are coming on. I think a lot of it is more relaxing and enjoying it more than anything else."

Meanwhile across the garage Lavilla is as cool and calm as ever, "Greg has worked hard with us at the back end of last year we recognised that there are a few areas we could improve on and we have worked on them and they have paid off and now we are seeing the benefits of them. Greg is so focused at the moment, I mean every session he goes out he is not pushing to the limit but he is working hard on making sure that the guys see the right data and can pin point areas for improvement. Fortunately every time he comes back in we make an improvement and he goes quicker," explained Wright.

With the fourth round of the championship ahead this Bank Holiday weekend at Oulton Park, Haslam and Lavilla will be back on track and hoping to gain more points for both their team and their individual championship hopes.
